NATO has announced two new projects to improve and strengthen air defense across Europe, according to a press release.

The announcement was made during a ceremony last Thursday (13) at NATO headquarters, where representatives from 15 member countries unveiled a multinational plan to address low-level aerial threats, meaning those flying below 150 meters.

These countries include Belgium, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Greece, Latvia, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Romania, Spain, Turkey, the United Kingdom, and the Czech Republic.

The Allies also revealed a separate initiative on passive air surveillance, including noise detection, to identify incursions that may evade radar and satellite coverage.

“The war in Ukraine has shown how effective and dangerous technologies such as small drones can be in conflicts. Enhancing NATO’s ability to detect, identify, track, and respond to these new threats while leveraging technological advancements for greater deterrence and defense is essential for the Alliance.”
